Good Morning

Greetings!
I scooted up Mt. Diablo today. I had to carry all the painting stuff on my back. The drive up was amaazing and I was giggling like a school girl the whole way cuz it was so pretty. Once I'd scooted up the whole 3,000 feet to the summit, I turned around and stopped to try and make a painting - It came out kinda nasty but I learned a lot.
Deer came to see me while I painted!!!And everything was covered in amazing light all day As I was packing up I started hearing coyotes! It was spooky and I left.
Next week I'm off to Maine with Ms. Ellen O'Reilly and friends and am hoping to make lots of stuff. So come back and see, please!

Donde Esta La Biblioteca?

Greetings!
Took a long route on my scoot today and went over to Hog Island Oyster Co.

From there, I cruised back and stopped to do some painting.

The photo makes my painting seem like a lie, but it was sunny and blue skies when I started. I'm slow. Also, the frame is a lie. It's not really framed. The painting is still wet and drying in my bathroom. I just photoshopped that on there to try and make it look more impressive! This painting took about 3 hours, which was long enough for the weather to change about 4 times. Lots of deer hunters in the area stopping to check it out and say hello. Also, this was apparently in George Lucas' backyard - the road seen in the painting is Lucas Valley Road.
This was an amazing little stretch of redwoods that I cruised through on my way -And here's a cow I saw -And here's a stretch that I thought was really pretty -And here's my scooter, Morticia, chilling in nature across from where I was painting -A very nice day. Hoping to get back out again tomorrow.
Oh! And I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Chris Nabholz for breakfast this morning. Great to see him, and hope more friends will phone me up if they out to these parts. LOVEU NABHOLZ - GREAT SEEING YOU, FREND!

Greetings, friends!
Here's some recent drawings. Ever since the Primos Parilla food truck disappeared and stopped serving delicious Argentinean food to my neighborhood I've been very, very upset. Felt the need to include them in this little sketchbook homage as a thanks for the best chicken of all time. They're the truck with the little "RIP" beneath it. Very sad, but I will never forget them or their mushed up green stuff that tasted to good with my chicken.That third truck up from the bottom is the Chairman Bao truck, and I just learned that the graphics on it were designed by James Jean! I had always liked them, and this would explain why. Also did a drawing on Haight street, and the other one's looking at the Ferry building on Embarcadero. Did one of Chinatown, too, but it sucked and my hands were freezing so I'm not posting it because it's just fugly.

How are you doing? Hopefully very well. I miss anyone and everyone that's not here right now and hope this is finding you well!!!

GORGES

Greetings all -
Headed over to Aurora, NY this weekend for a family funeral. Could have been a sad gathering, instead it was beautiful and great seeing everybody. Also lovely to to wish my mum a Happy Mother's Day in person. Aurora is right on Cayuga Lake and I'd almost forgotten how amazing that area of New York is. Here's my doodle:Sadly, Grandma passed away, but being with everyone else that loved her was the best way to say goodbye. Mostly I consider myself privileged for getting a solid 25 years of my life with her. Here's a picture of her:

Here are a few sketchbook pages. Loosened up a lot with these and subsequently made a pretty spectacular mess. I want to get outside more often while autumn is here and it still smells and feels so superb. Leaves crunching under my shoes and 'pumpkin' being a flavor at every restaurant. Perfection.

Still not sure what this guy is from, but I've learned that his name stands for: "Mental organism designed only for killing." Perfect.

Hiya friends -
Lovely holiday weekend brought me over to Dolores Park to do this doodle on the 4th. My drawing doesn't do it justice, but the scene was crazy with hordes of guys running around in speedos and everyone trying to sell me a very special cookie.

In other news, I <3 LEGO. I've been a fan forever, but recently stepped up my game with organizational bins and a tackle box to sort the tiny pieces. NBD.

Rock? "r-o-k"?

Drawing on the tiny screen is really hard, but I think it also helps to force good painting habits on me. For example, I constantly have to zoom way out from the image so that I can get a sense of the whole composition. I liken this to standing up and stepping back from an actual canvas.

Painting on the phone also makes me use as big of a brush as possible for each spot on the screen. As soon as I start to fiddle with something really tiny, I wind up with a bunch of noisy scratches that just distract or go unnoticed in the bigger picture. I think the phone is also making me establish a decent method for attacking an image since I can't get too complex with layers or selection edges or nothin.

In this piece, I'm not sure if it's the value structure, composition or the colors (or maybe a bit of all three) that bother me most. But next time I sit down, I want to focus on pushing the light areas on top of the dark areas on top of the light areas on top of the dark areas . . . etc, etc . . . Really concentrate on layering and exaggerating my values. I also want to figure the composition out a bit more w/ a thin brush so it's not such a happy/unhappy accident as I progress through the piece. This one got a little weird and I wound up just slapping on some bright colors in an attempt to separate foreground elements from stuff behind them!
Still, it's a good time trying to make images in a painter-ish way rather than my usual pencil/watercolor-wash-attack method.

While feasting on Chipotle this weekend, I hung around for a bit and made this sketch on my iPhone. I used the "Brushes" application and liked it . . . . but wish they'd let you use layers.The application also has a cool feature where it saves your brush strokes into a movie. Take a peek:

Greetings all!

I have mentioned Roadfood.com on this blog before but must do so again for this post.

You see, recently I've had the extreme pleasure of relocating to Baltimore. One of the very first things I did was get online to figure out some preferred places to dine. So you can imagine my excitement when roadfood.com informed me of a certain Andy Nelson's BBQ less than a half-mile from my house! As I've said before, this website has never lead me astray and I cherish each and every location it shares with me. I don't think there could have been a warmer greeting to a new city. It's great to meet you, Andy Nelson.Since my discovery I've gotten to know this establishment well and would already consider it a close friend - So much so that I spent some hours today camped in the back of my car attempting to capture Andy in this here portrait.

Other news: Hiked down to Washington D.C. with my dear friend, McLean. (http://mcleannews.blogspot.com/). We poked around, did some drawing and visited yet another roadfood.com location: Ben's Chili Bowl.Can't hype roadfood.com enough. If you love (or long to) stuff your face with some of the finest cultural delicacies that this planet has to offer, then ya gotta look it up.

Over at the Re-Drawn blog, the topic for the first half of the month was Thundercats. Since I somehow completely missed this cartoon when I was younger, I am not exactly sure who this dood is. But I chose him because it's Fall and I wanted to kill two birds with one stone - 1.) Make drawing for blog and 2.) Get into Halloween spirit!Feels nice to be in Portland this year and to have Autumn back. Sarasota is beautiful but I missed trees turning red and having an excuses to drink hot chocolate at every possible opportunity.

Greetings -

Hope everyone has been stupendous since we spoke last. I have been animating like the dickens at Laika during the day and falling in love with Portland during the not-day (Hence lack of posts!) It has been glorious and I feel freaking dynamite. And now, I am ready to get back to making this blog hott.

Making Pictures!

Heyo!!

Here's a drawing I did from the roof of Cuyahoga Community College. During senior year of high school I took art classes here instead of going to high school through a state program called post-secondary enrollment. A few good friends joined me and we had an incredible time life-drawing, sculpting and painting. During breaks we'd come up to the roof and screw around with different sports we'd invented. It was a good time and being back felt really happy.

This second one is a drawing I did one night in Sarasota. Thesis was about to be due and I was feeling completely mental, so I packed up and went to Steak n' Shake around 4 in the morning for some chili. It was empty and I got really into this drawing. Hope you like!

Back from Winter Break!

My living room with a Christmas tree -
This last one was a something I made for my mom and pop for Christmas. It's a drawing of a Zamboni to thank them for supporting me through my hockey career (and everything else, too.) I thought the Zamboni would make a fun drawing.

The frame started off as a wooden frame from Michael's and I built up sculpey around it to make fake sculpture-stuff. Then I painted it red and did a layer of gold leaf on top. When it was all covered, i sealed the thing with an acrylic sealer and snapped it all together!! My parents have a lot of nice stuff in their house so I wanted to make it look sort of decoration-ish and classy, but without being pretentious or impersonal. I think it came out looking nice but in a lop-sided, etch-a-sketch sort of way! Good one!

End of Semester Drawing Time

Fall semester is over and it's a crazy feeling. I went out today and did some biking up at Alafia State Park and stopped for some sketching on the way home. Laid back!! What a glorious feeling!!Alafia is way the heck up north and in the middle of nowhere. This little gas station is right next to the trails and reminded me of back home in Ohio - except with palm trees and orange groves all around it. It was called the Picnic Grocery.

By the time I got back to Sarasota the sun was already setting. It seemed too nice out to just quit and go inside so I pulled into the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center and busted this out real quick. The awkward colors are due in part to my poor sense of color theory, and also to the sun setting at a record pace. So it's got some freaky colors.
I hope to be seeing the Van Wezel again real soon at graduation!! But not too soon - time is flying back at a nasty pace!! Gotta slow down!

Trip Back to Florida

I got down and settled into Sarasota in the last week and had a great time doing so. Here's the road the morning I was leaving Ohio.I was making the drive alone so I wanted something to break up the time. Out of nowhere, (actually, out of Google) I found roadfood.com and am now the happiest person alive. The website is run by a married couple, Michael and Jane Stern who travel the globe and find the finest eating establishments. While they have some very nice and fancy places on there, I took a serious liking to the "Soul" locations. I logged an hour or so on their site and found some of the finest places I've ever seen.

The first was in Charlotte, NC and was called, Coffee Cup. Here she is.
The staff inside was the nicest ever and the meal was one of the best I've tasted.

For dinner, I made it down to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and had food at a place called The Wreck.

The Wreck has never bothered to put a sign out front. People just know it's there cuz it's so sweet. Supposedly, it used to be an old bait shop, and it's not hard to believe after seeing the interior. The place was tiny and easy to miss, but google maps got me there ok.

Once you're inside, the back opens up and there s decent sized dining area that sits along a little fishing inlet. Here's a shot from my table.

And here's a shot of my seafood platter. The owner of the restaurant created this platter, I think, and on the menu it states that he will not make it baked or broiled because it's a "very special platter". It really was amazing and the best meal I can remember eating. Good beer, too; called Palmetto. I'd never heard of it but was really getting into it.

After dinner I went out back and looked at the cool fishing boats.

The next day I woke up and did a little wandering around in Charleston, SC. It was really gorgeous and I really enjoyed myself, just sort of poking around.

Like I said, everything was really gorgeous, but it was the sort of things that I like to snap a photo of and not draw.

But then I saw the USS Yorktown!! I didn't go inside but I sat on the back of my can and did some doodling. Here's the sketch.That was it for SC. I started drivin and wound up in Jacksonville. Look how nice it looks coming in!!Dinner at Beach Road Chicken Dinners. It wasn't anywhere near as good as Coffee Cup or The Wreck, but still; it was crazy awesome and I never would have found anything as cool without roadfood.com. Perfick.
One more quick drawing of random chick in Barnes and Noble and I was in Florida faster than I had even wanted to be.

But it's real nice being back and I got all situated. Next up is thesis!! Time to get bananas.

Fishing this morning! Went out with my pops but had to come in early cuz the waves were terrifying. Sat in the boat and did some drawings instead.

The first drawing is the fishing hardware!! The tiny names written next to each of the spoon's is the actual name that the company gives to them!! "Blueberry Muffin" is a timeless classic up near Ashtabula, OH, but lately people have been reeling them in on "Mass Confusion" and all different shapes and sizes of "Boys and Girls"!! Fish on!! hahaha

Had some time to kill so sat in parking lot and drew Wal Mart looking enormous.

Then I saw this on my way home and was almost sick from how quaint and picturesque it was. But not sick enough to sit out and savior it for an hour or so. You're very handsome, Ohio!!

Mr. Blake Cook

Earlier in the summer I got a hold of one of my favorite people of all time and talked bout how we had to get together but nothing ever happened. Then tonight my phone rang and there he was!! Blake Cook calling!! This is him:

He's famous!! Since I stopped taking classes at his school, the college started using him in a bunch of promotional material! He tells me he's on a billboard somewhere on 480W too! We had good laughs bout this. What a classy picture hes got himself here on this brochure!! Very nice!!

If I had a list of favorite people I've ever known in my whole life Blake would totally be number 2 or maybe three, but seriously high up there!! We met up at a tiny bar he knew on Miles road and we chilled for 3 hours.

Blake does mostly installation art and it is always the most crazy, mind boggling things of all time. We talked tonight about how a lot of times people will just laugh or wonder if he's trying to trick them or something mean like that. But what's crazy is that if you can get him to talk about his work, it all makes so much sense that there's nothing strange about it at all! It's the opposite; they're all about the most sincere and inspired things I've stumbled into.

One piece I got to witness was at a group show he had in Cleveland. He took a tiny room in the gallery and completely filled it with cardboard. He then took a chainsaw to it all and slashed a real narrow little passage through it. When the show opened, it was called, "Anticipating our Reunion via Blood Clot". People gathered in the narrow little cardboard hall and got real uncomfortable trying to squeeze past each other while scraps of cardboard came dusting down about them. People were claustrophobic in there! But after thinking bout the piece and having Blake explain it to me like 100 times, this is perfect and intentional! The stuffy opening forces viewers to actually witness and think about the uncomfortable, dirty, not healthy little spaces that heart attack victims have in their bodies!! It's all about death, too, and I'm sure Blake means for it to run much deeper than what I've explained. Anyhow, afterwards it's clear that his chaos has a point. It's just saying, "hey! check this out! Think about this!".

That's what I take from it. I think a lot of people think that installation and modern art must be impossible to grasp or something, but from what I've taken from Blake I think it's all just funny ways to say, "Hey did u ever think about this??".

Thanks Blake! Hope I haven't slandered you!!!

More Art Dumping

Here's some figure drawings from this summer. My hand felt both rusty and fresh at the same time - it was kind of like if a person went blind for a period of 2 years and couldn't see anything - And then all of a sudden, he regains his vision and he can see everything all different! Drawings are awful shaky but I felt like i had tons of fresh perspective with them. Also, there was this crazy awesome guy there who was just a machine. He said he'd never had any art training, but he couldn't stop talking bout the book, "The Natural Way to Draw". I was so into his drawings and trying to make him make me awesome but he was really scared that if he said too much then I'd start drawing like him. He's prolly right. I need to work my own thing! All these are from about 5 or 6 different "Pay-as-you-go" sessions at Cleveland Institute of Art. It's real chilled out and is the most refreshing thing of all time.

Here's a sketch from restaurant I love in Cleveland called Tommy's. I usually stop here b4 the figure drawing for ultimate food healing. Try the cigar sandwich! Mix milkshake flavors and taste craziness!!

Also check out the insane little paper Lunar Module I found online. It is unbelievable. It is EXACTLY like the real NASA one and is all paper! There must be someone else out there who thinks this is awesome. It was a free download and then I just printed it out on my printer here. This little part here took me like 3 hours though, so I stopped building after that. I made my polygon version of it in Maya about the same way this one is built out of paper. I kind of botched it up, but still - very nice!!

Wow! I can't believe making a blog is this easy! Pretty much any idiot in the whole world can do this! Perfect!

Anyways, I wanna use this to share stuff I'm working on with classmates and the rest of the world. Feedback is good. So, hopefully people can find me and tell me what to start fixing.
Also I'm hoping it'll really motivate me and yada yada yada . . . . u get the idea.
So here's some stuff! I don't have much scanned, but now that I have my awesome blog inspiration, I'll get a bunch more up.

This one is me trying to figure out what a distant planet's landscape looks like. Unfortunately, to me, it keeps looking like Utah and lame Bill Watterson rip offs. Also, im thinking the clouds need to go. It'd be spacier x 10 with some planets and stars up there, right?

And this one is my two thesis characters. I did a Super Sculpey sculpts of them too.

Making things with sculpey is just about the most irritating thing in the whole world to me. Just when i get something not looking miserable, i'll start working on another part and later find i've been crushing the first part all along. Miserable! I wish I was able to make these things not be so lumpy and more awesome looking.

Moving on, here's a render of some thesis business I've been working on.

The Top one is the astronaut's ship and the bottom one is a bit of the alien's. I need to make the astronaut's way more hilarious. As it is, i just referenced picture's of NASA's Lunar Modules as close as I could. I wanted to get it structurally ok and understand how the heck the thing really fits together before I went about jumbling it all up and trying to caricature it.
The one below is just a weird and awkward little opening I'm working on for the alien's ship. It's getting really annoying to work on and I think I'm gonna move onto something else for a while. I started out wanting it to just be swamped with crazy engine stuff, but I've had about as much crazy engine stuff modeling as I can take for a bit. The rest of the ship is really incomplete right now, but I just discovered Gerry Anderson online and will be happy if I can make it 1/2 as cool as any of his.

And finally, here's some sketch work I've been werking! I don't have most of my book scanned, but here's a few of my favorite pages.

How do I make it so that every time i import a new picture, it will just go to the place where my cursor is or at least go to the end?! Right now it just keeps dumping images at the top and I have to drag them down. Someone help me!
